Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Dushore PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Dushore PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Dushore PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Dushore PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Dushore PAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Dushore PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Dushore home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are looking at, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Dushore PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Dushore PA area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Dushore PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Dushore PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Dushore health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Dushore PA home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dushore PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
