  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Elizabethtown PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Elizabethtown PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Elizabethtown PAAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Elizabethtown PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Elizabethtown home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Elizabethtown PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Elizabethtown PA area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Elizabethtown PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with Elizabethtown PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Elizabethtown healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Elizabethtown PA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Elizabethtown PA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania

Elizabethtown (Pennsylvania Dutch: Betzischteddel) is a borough in Lancaster County, 21 miles (34 km) southeast of Harrisburg. Small factories existed at the turn of the 20th century when the population in 1900 was 1,861. There was a slight increase in the next decade, with 1,970 people living in Elizabethtown in 1910. As of the 2000 census, the population of the borough was 11,887.[3] Elizabethtown is commonly referred to in south-central Pennsylvania as "E-Town."[4] This nickname is also used for the local college and high school.

There are two stories about the origin of the town's name. In one version it is named after Elizabeth Reeby, wife of Michael Reeby who sold the first building lots here in about 1795. Another version has it named after the wife of Captain Barnabas Hughes who purchased The Black Bear Tavern in 1750.

The officially accepted history is that, in 1753, Captain Barnabas Hughes acquired land and laid out a town, naming it for his wife, Elizabeth. The early settlers were primarily Scots-Irish and Pennsylvania Dutch.
