Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Jeannette PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Jeannette PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Jeannette PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Jeannette PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Jeannette PAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Jeannette PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Jeannette home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Jeannette PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Jeannette PA area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Jeannette PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Jeannette PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Jeannette medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Jeannette PA residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Jeannette PA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
