Sonographer Job Summary

Flinton PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Flinton PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Flinton PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Flinton PAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Flinton PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Flinton home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Flinton PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Flinton PA area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Flinton PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Flinton PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Flinton medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Flinton PA home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Flinton PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
