Sonographer Occupation Summary

Muse PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Muse PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Muse PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Muse PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Muse PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Muse PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Muse home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Muse PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Muse PA area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Muse PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Muse PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Muse healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Muse PA home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Muse PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Muse, Myanmar

Muse (Burmese: မူဆယ်, pronounced [mùsʰɛ̀]; Shan: မူႇၸေႊ; Chinese: 木姐) is the capital town of Mu Se Township (also spelled as Muse Township) in northern Shan State, Myanmar. It is situated on the Shweli River (Nam Mao), and is connected by a bridge and road to Ruili (Shweli, [ʃwèlì], in Burmese) in Yunnan Province, China.[1][2][3]

The old bridge in Muse, dubbed the "Gun Bridge" by locals in reference to the frequency of illegal armaments trafficking through the bridge, was closed in 2005, replaced by a wider bridge parallel to it.[3]

Muse is today connected to Mandalay via Lashio by the National Highway 3 450 km Asian Highway route 14 (AH14),[5] The old Burma Road links the new road to Bhamo in Kachin State which links to the Ledo Road.[6] Mandalay-Lashio-Muse Road included part of the Burma Road and was rebuilt and upgraded for heavy traffic in 1998 on a Build-Operate-Transfer basis (BOT) by the Asia World Company headed by the son of the former opium warlord Lo Hsing Han. It has cut the journey time from 2 days, even a week in the rainy season, to just 12–16 hours.[7] Muse is also connected to central Burma via the Mandalay-Lashio Northern Shan State Railway.[8]
