Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Valencia PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Valencia PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Valencia PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Valencia PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Valencia PAAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Valencia PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Valencia home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Valencia PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Valencia PA area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Valencia PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Valencia PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Valencia medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Valencia PA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Valencia PA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
