Sonographer Occupation Summary

Mount Juliet TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Mount Juliet TN hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Mount Juliet TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Mount Juliet TN hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Mount Juliet TNAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Mount Juliet TN hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Mount Juliet home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Mount Juliet TN ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Mount Juliet TN area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Mount Juliet TN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Mount Juliet TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Mount Juliet medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Mount Juliet TN home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Mount Juliet TN area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Mount Juliet, Tennessee

Mt. Juliet[5] (also known as Mount Juliet) is a city located in western Wilson County, Tennessee. A suburb of Nashville, it is approximately 17 miles (27 km) east of downtown Nashville. Mt. Juliet is located mostly between two major national east-west routes, Interstate 40 and U.S. Route 70. As of 2016, Mt. Juliet has a population of approximately 33,263 people. Mt. Juliet is the largest city in Wilson County. The official city charter has the name listed as Mt. Juliet[6], however the United States Postal Service lists the name as Mount Juliet[7].

Mt. Juliet was formed in 1835 and incorporated as a city in 1972.[1][2] The most widely accepted theory regarding the naming of the town is that it is named for the Mount Juliet Estate, a manor house in County Kilkenny, Ireland. It is the only U.S. city with this name. [8]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.6 square miles (43 km2), of which 16.2 square miles (42 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km2) is water. The total area is 1.99% water. Recent annexations along the east side of South Rutland Road as well as a land swap with the City of Lebanon for the Bel Air at Beckwith project (southeast quadrant of I-40/Beckwith Road interchange) have increased the city's geographical area to approximately 21.78 square miles (56.4 km2).
