Most potential students will start by searching for colleges that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Duffield VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Duffield VA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Duffield VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Duffield VA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Virginia or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Duffield VAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Duffield VA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Duffield home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Duffield VA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Duffield VA area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Duffield VA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Duffield VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Duffield health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Duffield VA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Duffield VA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
