Sonographer Job Description

Kasigluk AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Kasigluk AK clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Kasigluk AK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Kasigluk AK hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alaska or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Kasigluk AKAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Kasigluk AK outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Kasigluk home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Kasigluk AK ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Kasigluk AK area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Kasigluk AK health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Kasigluk AK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Kasigluk health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Kasigluk AK home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kasigluk AK area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
