Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Fenton LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Fenton LA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Fenton LA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Fenton LA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Louisiana or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Fenton LAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Fenton LA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Fenton home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Fenton LA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Fenton LA area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Fenton LA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Fenton LA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Fenton health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Fenton LA home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Fenton LA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
